Bengaluru: Two years after its triumphant win against the former winners of the quiz show Jeopardy, IBM’s supercomputer Watson was commercially used to assist medical professionals in diagnosing and treating patients. Now, Watson will take on the role of a customer service agent to tackle the hundreds of thousands of customer service calls that go unresolved every year.

A part of IBM’s Smart Commerce initiative, the Watson Engagement Advisor which is being used by several of IBM’s customers including ANZ Bank, Celcom, IHS, Nielsen and Royal Bank of Canada, offers an “Ask Watson” feature that will greet and offer to help resolve a customer problem through email, web chats, sms, smartphones and even with voice assistance. Most of the work on the Watson Engagement Advisor was led by the IBM Research India Lab with support from IBM’s global Research Labs.
